Meet the compassionate therapists at Breaking the Cycle Therapy, a recovery-rooted practice offering personalized support for individuals, couples, families, and children online across Texas & California and in-person in Ft. Worth/Hurst, TX.
Addiction is a family disease, but recovery doesn’t have to wait for the addict to get sober.
When a loved one struggles with alcohol or substance use, the entire family system is pulled into an orbit of chaos, secrecy, and exhaustion. You may feel like you are working harder than the addict is to save their life—only to find yourself losing your own in the process.
As a Psychologist and Marriage and Family Therapist, I designed this 8-week virtual coaching group specifically for Texans who are ready to stop “managing” the disease and start reclaiming their sanity. We bridge the gap between the spiritual wisdom of Al-Anon and the clinical precision of Family Systems theory.
This isn’t just a support group; it is a skills-based intensive. Over eight weeks, we move through a structured curriculum designed to dismantle the “Family Disease” model:
Week 1-2: The Anatomy of the System. We move from “Moral Failing” to the “Disease Model,” identifying the roles (The Hero, Enabler, Scapegoat) you’ve been forced to play.
Week 3-4: The Boundary Blueprint. Learn the clinical difference between a “Control-based Ultimatum” and a “Self-Protective Boundary.”
Week 5-6: Clearing the F.O.G. Deconstruct the Fear, Obligation, and Guilt that keep you trapped in the cycle of enabling.
Week 7-8: The New Legacy. Build a “Relapse Response Protocol” so that your peace of mind is no longer contingent on someone else’s sobriety.
While peer-led groups are invaluable, “Breaking the Cycle” provides the clinical grit needed to handle complex family dynamics. You will walk away with tangible worksheets, communication scripts, and a “hoop” of control that is finally your own.
“You didn’t Cause it, you can’t Control it, and you can’t Cure it… but you can recover from it.”

Dr. Alan Heide didn’t enter the field as a polished clinician; he walked through struggle, legal trouble, and personal transformation before ever picking up a textbook. His lived experience with addiction, recovery, and self-redemption is the foundation of this entire practice.
After turning his life around, Dr. Heide pursued degrees in psychology and built a practice rooted in 12-step recovery, transparency, and honesty. What began as a solo mission now supports countless individuals and families through therapy, education, and one of the region’s most respected mental health podcasts.
